DLPS (India) and Mearns Primary (UK) Learn from Each Other
Ms. Gargi Dutta Biswas (Head Science Department DLPS) was awarded by the Staff Exchange Programme 2012 under the UK India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) to carry out a shared international project with Mearns Primary School, Scotland, UK for undertaking the project— A Smarter Way to Manage Solid Waste- A Comprehensive Study on Renewable Energy Generation in July 2013. She visited the partner school in June along with Dr. Mrignaini, (Executive Director, DLPS).
They spent seven working days in the partner school and brought home immense learning that they now plan to translate into their own school. The young people in both schools learnt about Sustainable Living and to live in harmony with the planet. The project created global awareness to the problem of domestic waste management and helped students of both schools collaborate.
Energy Conservation’ being very vital to human survival, this project has helped both the schools to bring learning into real world context and help the students apply their skills towards solving this global concern. The students now understand that nothing is impossible and however small, they too can make a difference.
“One thing that influenced me the most was that each child was very good at self-management and the school had a very healthy and positive learning environment. Apart from that, every classroom, and each student & teacher had so much to teach us”, said the School Director, Dr. Mrignaini.
“We are now working towards adopting the best practices of our partner school as also taking the project to the next level of exchange, said Mrs. Dutta (Science Head, DLPS).
